Web 2.0 | Print |

Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.

Web2.0 is the common name for the ‘next generation’ of web-based products, services and businesses that leverage the platform independence and ubiquity of the Internet. Some would put more restriction on the definition referring to browser plug-ins like Macromedia Flash or specific web technologies like Ajax, but Web 2.0 is a concept that is independent of the technology it is built upon the same way that e-commerce is not a Java, PHP or Ruby dependant product.

If you’re looking for the leading edge of Internet programming, think about Web 2.0 products and services.

Bookmarking 2.0

Social bookmarking is the habit or practice of saving bookmarks to a website and “tagging” them with keywords. Social bookmarking sites are a popular way to store, classify, share and search links. You can:

  • Create social bookmark accounts
  • Contact other people for professional networking, based on their social bookmarks
  • Allow yourself to share bookmarks on research topics
  • Subscribe to someone's bookmarks via RSS and receive updates whenever they add new websites
  • Collaborate on projects with other schools, sharing bookmarks between all participating communities

RSS 2.0

RSS is a Web Content Syndication format. Its name is an acronym for Really Simple Syndication. At the top level, an RSS document is an <rss> element, with a mandatory attribute called, “version” that specifies the version of RSS that the document conforms to. If it conforms to this specification, the version attribute must be 2.0.

Marketing 2.0

The Internet has reached critical mass allowing social networking sites to catalyze the evolution of marketing on the web. We are beginning to see a merging of the "old" and the "new" ways. As a result, we would like to introduce a new series of posts on Marketing 2.0 that revolve around new mediums, new idea and new opportunities.
